Open water swimming adventures in the English Lake District are gaining in popularity.
I spend all my year training for events and have been for several years, that’s not unusual but just occasionally its good to take a more relaxed approach to exercise, this last weekend I joined up with a group of outdoor swimming enthusiasts to spend a couple of days swimming in and around Lake Windermere. The weekend was organised by “Swim the Lakes” a group run by Peter Kelly based in Ambleside.Their philosophy is to encourage swimmers to enjoy the environment and experience swimming in many different locations, lakes, rivers and mountain tarns, as a friendly group and leaving competition behind for a change.
This makes for a relaxed but busy schedule non the less, don’t be fooled into thinking this is going to be too laid back easy pushover couple of days. Pete and his team run a very professional outfit, incorporating all the safety precautions needed when you have 15 swimmers of different abilities to care for, no one gets left behind.
This weekend we swam in 3 Lakes a river and a Mountain tarn in two days, that takes some organising but assisted by Tors and Leanne we were guided between the swims, fed hot chocolate, provided with hats and various spare kit we might have not thought of. Each swim escorted by a safety canoe and swim guide in the water to make sure the groups of different abilities were all catered for without becoming too spread out across the water. What I find particularly nice is how a group of strangers quickly bond in these situations forming new relationships and creating many banter driven exchanges to make for a really nice breakaway from our normal daily lifestyle.
